Hello, long time no see... Well, working a steady monday to friday keeps me a lot buisyer then living on the road. I have had a hard time adapting to it, I have always missed the long haul.
The fact is, that although I planned to stay woking here until at least Christmas, unproffessional atitudes within management have accelerated my exodus, giving them the two week notice, and planning a short vacation before searching for new wheels. No, I don't have a job yet. Searching for long, long haul...

I end my job August 19th.

Wow, it's been a long time. As you know, I've now been in Spain for a while, and I am driving a truck around Spain and France, home every weekend. But you can't imagine how busy I've kept myself, but you do need to have in mind that Europe does not boast of wifi availability on the road as North America does.

Well, my Subaru celebrated the end of the cross-Canada trip by busting the brake lines, they rusted out so I lost all the brakes. Finally, I decided to donate my car to charity, where they can fix it and find some use for it.

My life is up side down at the moment. I'm in the process of moving out of home. I am currently unemployed, and in three days I'll be homeless as well. My only possessions will be my car, and a couple suitcases.

I feel liberated by the fact of getting rid of so much. My furniture, my TV (sniff...), most of my books, and a whole lot of stuff of which the Salvation Army has been a recipient.

But it is exhausting.

I still have to drive out west (in my Subaru) for the last time for a farewell visit to my Canadian family out west, before someone takes possession of my car (It will probably be the Fire Department in Ottawa, they could use it for practice), so I will try and do my best to document my next trip across the Trans-Canada.

LAST CANADIAN TRUCKING DAYS

Forgive my tardiness, but my life has been topsy-turvy for the last month or so...

I have decided to end my Canadian trucking experience for good. I have had enough. It has been fun for the last (almost) five years, but it is fun no more. I did enjoy it very much while it was a new experience, and I'll never regret having done it. But as another winter approaches, I have to say that, since the last one, I have been looking forward to it with dread. Deep down I'm a European trucker. Snow once in a while, OK. But not all the time, please.
Last but not least, I miss my family in Spain, and the food...

I will be in Spain on time for Christmas, and I plan to keep on trucking.

New job: H&R Transport

Hello, y'all!
Sorry for the delay on my posts, but I did loose my job, due to the recession, of course.
But all is well, I just started work at H&R Transport, out of Lethbridge, AB. I will be based out of Montreal.
I just finished mt training in Toronto, and tomorrow I drive off on my first trip. They have assigned me an almost new Freightliner Cascadia, like the one in the picture.

New trailer skirts (And the last of winter).

My boss installed new trailer skirts on the trailer, they are supposed to save 6-8% on fuel. They also look better.

This trip I drove a rented truck, since Jeff left earlier on my Peterbilt. It was an interesting experience, because by driving this crappy truck I learn to appreciate more the Peterbilt I usually drive. This truck had everything wrong: downgraded engine, ten speed transmission, no bunk heater, no inverter, ugly white steel rims all around on a disgusting yellow painted truck...

The nose dosn't look too bad. The fog lights are useless.

The seats are a hand-me-down from the older 9400 series. I like the side window.

The dashbord is very practical, and I love the switches on the steering wheel. But the build quality is beyond most truckers dignity. I hope they're better on owner-operator units.

I mean the real deal, where it's real dangerous, unpredictable. No TV series on, that means no husky voice in the background predicting imminent doom.
What happens When you get rain over frozen? Look and see.

Smooth Rock Falls, Ontario. Hwy 11. All looks well.

Manitoban Trans-Canada. That's where the fun begins. The trailer would slip and drag the whole unit into the ditch. Careful slow drivers like this one avoided the ditch, but got stuck on the ice when the trailer got into the inclined shoulder.

Slow motion jack-knife. Even at slow speeds like 30km/h.

This Trans-X truck even had chains on!

Ice is not the only danger. Whiteout conditions will get you into trouble too. Nice to have soft snow to land on. This one was on Hwy 11 between Hearst and Longlac, Ontario. I was westbound here.

As usual, I had my share of snow while at home in Ottawa. It snowed slow, but 24 hours non stop, so it got really covered. After plowing the street and the parking lots (the condo corporation takes care of that), I caught a fleet of dumper trucks with drawbar trailers lining up, and the CATERPILLAR bulldozer was shoveling up the mountains of snow into the waiting trucks. I took these pictures just as I was leaving for a trip, off to get my truck.

WINTER TRUCKING IN CANADA

I am thinking of stopping my blog. I don't have any feedback, so you can imagine how I feel... I have an account on facebook (Roger Escuain, the only one) and one on Youtube (rogertrucker). You could follow my travels from any one (I recommend both).

Most of you must of recognized the "six days on the road" parody... Well, yes, I laugh everytime I listen to Dave Dudley's song "Six days on the road". Only a comfortable trucker will refer to that song (no offence, Javi) ;-D
But I've been as far as Edmonton and Halifax, this being my first time to the Maritime provinces, New Brunswick and Nova Scotia. 22,000kms in one month.

I just discovered that I left my data transfer cable in the truck, so forgive me, I have to go and shoot myself, ARGGHHHHH!

But here's one picture of me chillin' out in the Halifax harbour.

I left Monday mid day, towards Adirondack National Forest in New York State, visited Lake Placid (great used book store there), from there took the ferry to Vermont, drove over to New Hampshire, across the Crawford Notch, up Mt.Washington, and via US Hwy2 straight to Bangor (Maine) and then to Ellsworth for easy access to the Acadia National Park. I arrived home Wednesday night, after 2,300 kms. (1,400 miles).

Subarus seem to be liked in the country. There were millionf of them! My 1996 Subaru Legacy (the burgundy one) felt at home during the trip, I can't wait for the winter so I can have some fun with it...!
It performed excellently during the trip, didn't skip a beat at all. Not bad for the 272,000kms it has now on the clock.

I am missing the pictures from the other camera, I left its battery charger in my truck. But here goes some of the pictures for now

Mt. Washington, New Hampshire. The road up (and then down the same way) is 8 miles long and has an average steepnes of 12%, so that means the only way up and down safely is locking the transmission in (L)ow, and stick to 20mph. Lots of fun, the toll was $20 and it included a bumper sticker that reads "This car climbed Mt. Washington!" and a diploma for the driver (me). The summit (8,000and something feet) was covered by a massive cloud, so I couldn't take any pictures from there, but the view was awesome on the drive.

I write this short post so you can see what my new truck looks like... Change of plans, I get to keep this brand-spanking new 2009 Peterbilt 387 with an ISX Cummings 470hp, and an Eaton Fuller 13. The trailer is also mine to keep, an also brand-spanking new 2009 Great Dane with a Carrier reefer.

Visiting TRUCK WORLD in Toronto

The truck show in Toronto wasn't as big as I thought it would be. There were hardly any trucks, the big names had a very small presence. Probably the biggest in the show was Freightliner, who had half a dozen class 8 tractors, most of which are old models and outdated, like the Classic or the Columbia. But they had their trucks looking great, all colors matching.
Peterbilt had a sad truck exposition, not even the 387 was there, and the trucks they did have were dull in comparison to the Montreal show I had been some time ago.
International could have been better, and with so much talk about their new LoneStar, which, if you ask me, is the coolest looking truck in the world (and I'm a Pete fan), they only had one LoneStar to show. The size of their stand was small, and obviously it was full of people, and it was friday.
So, unable to take a decent foto, I managed to get these on the web. I hope you enjoy it.

CHILLIN' IN MARBELLA

Greetings from Marbella! As you can see, I am finding ways to enjoy this tough trucking in Spain. I have to say that sipping cold beer and soaking up sun is the best way to spend a day off, and I have to tell you I didn't have a camera with me while enjoying a Tapa session in a Vasque Tasca in "La Canada" in Marbella, where I managed to park the truck for the weekend. Or watching the Manchester-Liverpool game in a british bar along with a bunch of Manchester fans. Good thing "we" won them!

Here is one of the funniest cars I've encountered so far. This East-german Trabant (with british reg) was on the M20 from Dover to London. Kind of different from the massive size of cars in America, like a Crown-Victoria or an Impala... With this one you run the risk of being run over.

Back for a european stint, fleeing from the canadian winter. Enjoying the road on a Volvo FH-12 480CV, very diferent from an american truck! My first trip went from Barcelona to Valencia (to load oranges), haul them to Basel, Switzerland, from there to Stutgart, and from Stutgart to Montcada i Reixac, near Barcelona. After surprising my parents and showing up unexpectedly for Christmas, it´s surprising how well I adapted to living in Spain. OK, I´ll admit it´s a LOT easyer with this fabulous weather...

I "enjoyed" some of the early snow that fell in Saskatchewan, while driving on th Yellowhead Hwy. from Nepawa to Lloydminster. Although it was mid-November, it looked more like mid-January of Febuary to me! Temperatures arround -5C

I finally stoped at that viewing point on the Trans-Canada HWY that I´ve always wanted to pull over in, but either I was always too lazy (not THAT easy to stop and park a 80,000lb truck when you´re half-dozing while crusing at 105km/h), or I sped past it without realizing it was there.
Somewhere north of the Soo, and south of Wawa.
The temperature was close to zero (celcius), so you can imagine the water wasn't inviting!

Well, that Boston trip is over, obviously. You can guess that I´m not one to update this blog as often as I´d like to... or you, eh! Here are some pictures taken near Boston, where the winter is still far away, and the weather is nice.

I'm on my way to load in Lethbridge (south of Calgary) for a cross-country run to Massatchussets, somewhere close to Boston. A load of frozen fries. 4,300 kilomiters. Look forward to some interesting youtube videos and photos.

I've been on the road for four days, and now I'm in Calgary. The summer is forgotten, nobody remembers it was here. For now, most of the leaves are gone, the trees lay bare, and the sun, when present, feels a tad lazy.

As the temperatures drop, the rain tends to get slushy or frozen, but I haven't contended yet with the snow. Not that it hasn't arrived, in some places. Arrived it has, but not stayed.

Caution advisory of the season: Look out for house transporters, making the last moves before the winter sets in!
